Cycle Access
I
grew up in Townsville where I rode on my “Melbourne Star” knock-off throughout
my University studies years. I could ride 7kms (in the 1980s) from home to Uni,
without leaving a cycle path. It was safe, and encouraged alternate travel and
fitness. When I can to Toowoomba in 1996, I tried once or twice to road to my
place of work 3kms away and nearly got run-over. I didn't try to cycle to work
again in fear of my life. I would support extensive cycle networks and resident
education on sharing the road. In many cases, the paths might need to be
developed on existing footpaths because the current roads are too narrow.
Shared foot and cycle paths can work well with good signage and education
programs for cyclists and road users.
